Most people get their wisdom teeth at some point during their late teens or early 20s, and generally, it is advisable to have them preemptively extracted. We have decades of experience performing this common procedure at the Center For Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, always emphasizing patient comfort, safety, and outcomes. We are proud to be a trusted provider of high-quality oral healthcare for patients throughout our community.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Also known as the third molars, wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop, typically emerging at some point between ages 17 and 21. The problem with wisdom teeth is that the jaw is generally too small to accommodate them, so the wisdom teeth often become impacted. This can cause chronic pain, spacing and alignment issues, cyst formation, and more. Proactive removal is the best way to avoid these problems altogether.

Why Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed Early?

Wisdom teeth removal is a kind of preventative care. Removing your wisdom teeth as early as possible, can avoid potentially painful and complicated outcomes such as impaction, wherein the wisdom teeth remain submerged in the gum tissue. This increases your risk of oral infection and can even compromise the health of adjacent teeth.

Additionally, by having your wisdom teeth removed early, you will generally have a smoother surgery and a faster, more comfortable recovery.

Recovery and Aftercare

Following your wisdom teeth removal, you will need time for your body to rest and heal. While recovery varies from patient to patient, most people return to their usual selves within days. We often recommend wisdom teeth removal on a Friday, meaning you will likely be ready to resume school or work on Monday.

While some bleeding, swelling, and minor discomfort are likely, these effects are all easily managed with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain remedies. We also recommend starting with a diet of soft foods and liquids, transitioning back to a regular diet as you feel able.

At the Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we use non-narcotic pain medication and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) to aid in the healing process.

During healing, your immune system sends white blood cells and growth factors to the wound site. While these cells are crucial, they also cause inflammation and pain. PRF concentrates these beneficial cells, delivering a three-day head start on healing without the downsides of inflammation.

Using PRF to speed up your recovery reduces your downtime and can minimize painful complications like dry socket.
